Australia's Jack Doohan is making his full-time Formula 1 debut with Alpine in 2025 after joining the team's junior academy back in 2022. At just 22, he'll join Alpine veteran Pierre Gasly as one of a handful of rookies on the grid.
Son of five-time Grand Prix motorcycle World Champion Mick Doohan, Jack kickstarted his racing career back when he was just nine years old after being gifted a go-kart by none other than the exceptional Michael Schumacher.
The Gold Coast native impressed shortly after, taking two Australian Karting Championships on his route to Formula 1 that kicked off in full force back in 2024, when Esteban Ocon stepped away from Alpine early to allow Doohan to make his first F1 start.
Doohan will race under the No. 7, a tribute to Kimi Raikkonen.
Heading into the 2025 season, Jack Doohan's Formula 1 career consists of just one event, the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Though contracted for 2025, Doohan got that chance as a result of negotiations between Esteban Ocon and Alpine to part ways one race early, making him the first Alpine Academy driver to be promoted to Formula 1. On his debut, he qualified 12th and finished 15th.
As an F1 reserve and test driver, Doohan has also driven in Free Practice 1 in six events between 2022 and 2024, prior to his race debut in late 2024.
Jack Doohan grew up in a racing family thanks to his father's success in Grand Prix motorcycle racing, but his first go-kart was a gift from none other than Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher back in 2012, when Doohan was nine years old.
Doohan started competing straight away, winning the Australian Karting Championship in both 2015 and 2016 before heading off to compete internationally. He finished third in the CIK-FIA Karting European Championship and sixth in the associated World Championship; it was enough to earn him a seat in Formula 4 in 2018.
That was perhaps his break-out year, as Doohan was signed to the Red Bull Junior Programme for that championship, at just age 15. He scored three wins that year in British F4, seeing him finish fifth in the standings, one point behind his teammate. On top of his British endeavors, he also competed in the German and Italian Formula 4 Championships.
In 2019, Doohan took part in the Formula 3 Asian Championship, where he finished second in the Championship; his primary series that year would be the Euroformula Open series, where he took 11th overall.
Still, it was enough for him to progress to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2020. Though he found his first year in the sport "very, very tough," Doohan turned up the following year with Trident and ready to compete. He was rewarded with a second overall in the championship, winning at Le Castellet, Spa-Francorchamps, and Sochi.
Such was his performance that Doohan was invited to compete in the final six events of the 2021 Formula 2 championship; his ability to get up to speed saw him earn a full-time seat there the following year, where wins at Silverstone, Hungary, and Spa saw Doohan take sixth in the championship in 2022.
That same year, he said goodbye to the Red Bull Junior Programme and inked a deal with the Alpine Academy instead. Bolstered by that move, he finished third in the 2023 Formula 2 championship. He was brought in as Alpine's reserve driver and got his first test in May of that year.
In 2024, Doohan stepped back from actively racing to serve as Alpine's official reserve driver. In August of that year, he was announced as Esteban Ocon's replacement in the F1 team.
As with many new Grand Prix drivers, Jack Doohan's net worth is unclear, though it is estimated to be somewhere under $2 million.
Doohan's personal driver website lists several partners, including Jetcraft, an aviation sales business; Global Jet, a private aircraft service; SunEnergy1, a US solar developer; M-Experiment, an eyewear and tech company; and Before You Speak, a coffee brand of which Doohan is an ambassador.
Jack Doohan hails from racing royalty, though his family found its success on two wheels instead of four. His father, Mick Doohan, won five consecutive 500-cc World Championships between 1994 and 1996. In 137 Grand Prix motorcycle starts, the elder Doohan secured 54 wins, 94 podiums, 58 pole positions, and 46 fastest laps — stats that anyone would be proud of.
Mick Doohan had a chance to test a Williams FW19 back in 1998, but he found the Formula 1 car a handful and ended the day crashed into a guard rail.
Jack Doohan keeps his cards close to his chest, but we do know that he's been in a relationship with a fellow Australian named Ebony Zippora Gold.
